Our Charlesworth Author Services education team, together with our partners at Eazy Solutions completed a week-long roadshow (Sept 23rd – 27th) in Turkey, delivering publishing training workshops and engaging with early career researchers (ECRs) on-site at seven universities. We visited institutions in Istanbul, Sakarya, and Ankara and met with a diverse range of highly engaged academics and researchers.

Our training sessions elicited a great reaction from our audiences and we fielded a wide range of questions from more than 800 attendees, discussing issues including peer review and the manuscript submission process – key areas of concern for ECRs internationally. The team covered a range of topics including Successful Academic Writing Skills, Managing the Publication Process and Key Skills for Early Career Researchers.

International peer review is unfortunately affected by bias: studies have shown that, statistically, your paper is likely to be reviewed by a white, male, native English-speaking academic after submission to an international journal. Academics are understandably concerned about how to manage this process. Charlesworth’s training, expert language polishing and editing services can help: as we explained to attendees across Turkey, our PhD-educated expert editors polish papers to make them read as if they were written by native English speakers. We also provide a ‘pre-peer review’ service: international researchers are able to have their work pre-reviewed by subject area experts prior to submission. All of this helps to bullet-proof papers before they are actually submitted to international journals. Did you know that more than 70% of authors using Charlesworth’s language polishing services end up getting their work published in their target journals?

In addition to writing and publishing skills, our team also outlined the key features of highly-cited academic research papers to colleagues in Turkey. Effective English writing consists of short sentences with limited punctuation: did you know, for example, that highly-cited academic papers tend to have titles that are seven words or less in length? Most academic papers are around 5,000 words in length on average: do you know how to balance your writing and develop a clear structure to keep your readers engaged and interested?

During our week on the road, we found a clear demand for researcher education and English language polishing services at Turkish universities; our engagement with local partner EaZy Solutions means that Charlesworth Author Services will now support national growth in research output and successful publishing by Turkish academics in high impact international journals.

It was not all work: We even had the chance to take a boat trip across the Bosphorous at sunset, and had lunch with colleagues next to a stunning lake in Sakarya!
